The Horseshoe Spread

The Horseshoe spread arranges seven cards in an arc, tracing the full arc of a situation from its origins through to its resolution. It is one of the oldest structured spreads in traditional cartomancy, predating many modern tarot layouts. The arc shape is intentional — it suggests a journey with a beginning, a middle, and an end that curves back toward the reader. Each position answers a specific question: what has happened, what is happening now, what influences are hidden, what the querent should do, what outside forces are at play, what should be avoided, and what the likely outcome is.

Step 1: Instructions

Use the Horseshoe when you are navigating a situation that is already underway and you need to understand all the forces in play before taking action. It is particularly strong for conflict situations, legal or financial decisions, and career moves where external factors are as important as your own intentions.

Step 2: Card Positions

  • #1The Past (events that led here)
  • #2The Present (current state)
  • #3Hidden Influences (what you cannot see)
  • #4Your Best Action
  • #5External Factors (others, environment)
  • #6Obstacles or What to Avoid
  • #7The Likely Outcome

Step 3: Interpretation Advice

Position four — your best action — is the pivot of this spread. Everything before it gives context; everything after it shows what happens when you act. If position four draws a card that surprises or challenges you, that is usually the most important message of the entire reading.
